Panasonic Unveils New Lumix S 40mm F2 Lens: Compact, Bright, and Designed for Content Creators

Together with the Lumix S9 Black Titanium Edition, Panasonic has also introduced the new Lumix S 40mm F2 (code S-S40). This is a full-frame L-Mount prime lens designed to offer daily versatility, high image quality, and a minimal footprint. This new 40mm lens fits into the brand's strategy of offering increasingly compact and mobility-oriented tools, especially for users of the recent compact full-frame Lumix S9, thus not losing the advantage of a smaller and lighter camera body.

The new lens is created to meet the needs of photographers and videomakers seeking a lightweight, bright lens that can deliver a natural look. According to Panasonic, the new Lumix S 40mm F2 is intended for street photography, portraits, and landscapes. Thanks to its focal length of 40mm, it finds itself positioned between the classic 35mm and 50mm, providing a realistic viewpoint while also offering a slight compression that enhances the subjects.

The New Lumix S 40mm F2

One of the strengths of the Lumix S 40mm F2 undoubtedly lies in its size and weight. With a length of 40.9mm and a weight of 144 grams, this lens is designed to integrate perfectly with the compact body of the Lumix S9, as mentioned above. The company has also thought about a design that maintains a consistent aesthetic between the camera body and lens, so as not to neglect this aspect.

The structure incorporates some characteristics from the Lumix S 18–40mm F4.5–6.3 lens, such as a 62mm front filter diameter and a similar profile when retracted. This way, photographers will find a certain operational consistency, with the necessary technical differences, between the two lenses.

As the name implies, the new Lumix S 40mm F2 has a maximum aperture of f/2, allowing for soft and pleasant bokeh, useful for both portraits and urban scenes with isolated subjects. Clearly, this characteristic also allows for more light capture in low-light conditions, reducing the need to increase ISO sensitivity.

This model features a fluorine coating on the first optical element, facilitating cleaning from dust and fingerprints. The construction is resistant to dust and splashes, allowing for outdoor use as well.

The new Panasonic Lumix S 40mm F2 is also designed for video production, eliminating focus breathing to achieve smooth focus transitions during shooting. There is also micro-step aperture control for softer exposure variations, particularly useful in sudden light changes. The new Lumix S 40mm F2 will be available from early June at a price of 399.99 euros.
