The new BMW iX3 changes color for real: it's no longer science fiction
BMW continues to push the boundaries of automotive innovation with the new BMW iX3 Flow Edition, a model that brings variable color body technology closer to mass production. Unveiled during the Beijing Auto Show 2026, this version represents a significant evolution compared to previous prototypes showcased by the company.
Unlike past concepts, such as the BMW iX Flow and the BMW i Vision Dee, which used numerous segmented exterior panels to achieve the color-changing effect, the iX3 Flow Edition adopts a more practical approach. The E Ink Prism technology is integrated directly into the hood's structure, eliminating the need for complex additional coatings.
This change is fundamental. Previous solutions, while visually spectacular, proved difficult to produce on a large scale, less durable, and poorly suited for everyday use. By integrating the electrophoretic system into the panel itself, BMW enhances durability and makes the technology more compatible with industrial processes.
Additional elements and details about the BMW iX3 Flow
The operation relies on microcapsules containing pigments that move under the influence of an electric charge, altering the surface color. An important advantage is that the system consumes energy only during the state change, making it particularly efficient, especially in the context of electric vehicles.
Currently, the technology is limited to the hood and uses a grayscale palette. Drivers can choose from eight preset animations, some inspired by iconic buildings in China. Although this implementation is still partial, it clearly demonstrates the technology’s potential.
BMW describes the iX3 Flow Edition as a demonstration of "readiness for mass production", even though the vehicle remains a concept for now. This definition suggests that the company no longer views this technology as just a styling exercise but as a concrete step toward real applications.
