This run shattered the record by 0.75 seconds that Ford previously held with the Cobra Jet 1800: 7.623 seconds set in September 2024, a huge margin in a discipline where milliseconds count.
A Project from Scratch, Not an Update
The Cobra Jet 2200 is not an evolution of its predecessor; it's a completely redesigned car developed in partnership with MLe Race Cars around a Pro Mod-style SFI 25.3D-spec chassis made by PMR Race Cars. The powertrain uses two custom Cascadia Motion motors instead of the four from the previous model. The two motors do not work in parallel on the wheels but deliver their power to a single shaft through a coupling reducer, a solution that simplifies the transmission while maintaining the redundancy of the twin motors.
The total power of this beast is 2,200 HP at the wheels, delivered on a 900-volt architecture. The new motors weigh half compared to the previous generation but produce 600 HP more, a jump in power density that is hard to achieve even with the most advanced thermal engines. The inverters reach an efficiency of 98%, which partly explains why the simplification from four to two motors has not penalized overall performance.

Central to the Project: A Triple Disc Centrifugal Clutch
Developed specifically by Ford for this application, it operates inversely compared to a classic Top Fuel clutch: it introduces the slippage needed for the start before locking into direct drive. This allows the 2,200 HP to attack the track without destroying the tires. The 5-speed Liberty's Gears transmission completes the system: according to Ford, the mere presence of the gearbox adds over a second of performance compared to a single-ratio setup, because it keeps the motors within the optimal power window for the entire 402 meters. The practical result is consistent launch times around 1.260 seconds over the first 18 meters, a consistency few thermal dragsters can offer with such repeatability.
Batteries as a Setup Parameter
The four XALT Energy packs totaling 32 kWh are not distributed in the chassis for simple space reasons: their positioning is integral to the tuning. The main pack is housed under the driver to lower the center of gravity; two more are located in front and behind the cockpit; one of the rear packs can be physically repositioned to modulate weight transfer at the start, just like adjusting the weights of a traditional dragster to find traction. The entire pack recharges in 20 minutes, well within the 45-minute window that NHRA imposes between rounds. For high-voltage safety, Ford has introduced a pyrotechnic circuit breaker that instantly isolates the battery pack from the powertrain in case of an emergency.
The progress of the electric Cobra Jet program is the clearest snapshot of how EV technology is advancing in high-performance motorsport. The Cobra Jet 1400 debuted in 2021 with 8.128 seconds; the Cobra Jet 1800 went down to 7.759 seconds in March 2024, then to 7.623 in September of the same year. The Cobra Jet 2200 has broken the 7-second barrier with an overall improvement of 1.26 seconds in less than five years. Ford attributes the consistency in times to the intense preventive simulation work done before bringing the car to the track, guided by the same logic driving the development of traction control strategies, directly drawn from endurance programs and Ford Racing.
