OpenAI would be developing a smartphone designed from the ground up around an interaction model based on AI agents, with the support of some of the main players in the global technology supply chain.
According to market rumors, the company would be collaborating with Qualcomm and MediaTek for the design of the processors, while Luxshare would have the role of exclusive partner for co-design and production of the device.
Mass production is expected no earlier than 2028, with specifications and suppliers set to be defined between the end of 2026 and the beginning of 2027.
The project fits into a vision aimed at overcoming the current model based on applications. The goal is to shift user interaction towards systems capable of understanding context and completing complex tasks without the need to go through individual apps.
The smartphone would become a continuous interface between the user and services, with AI agents able to manage requests, automate processes, and dynamically adapt to needs. This approach implies a radical rethink of the interface and user experience.
One of the key elements of the strategy is the integrated control of hardware and operating system. According to analyses, only through end-to-end management of the platform could OpenAI offer a truly complete and coherent AI service.
Moreover, the smartphone represents the most suitable device for this purpose: it collects real-time data on the user's context, a crucial element for AI agent inference. Its global spread also makes it the hardware category with the greatest potential scale in the short and medium term.
From a technical perspective, the project involves close integration between on-device processing and the cloud. Chips developed with Qualcomm and MediaTek will need to manage the execution of lightweight models locally, ensure reduced energy consumption, and, above all, provide advanced memory management.
The heaviest operations from a processing perspective would instead be handled by the cloud, in a hybrid architecture aimed at balancing performance, latency, and autonomy.
For Qualcomm and MediaTek, collaboration with OpenAI represents a significant long-term opportunity, especially in terms of renewing the premium device market. The high-end segment, estimated at 300-400 million annual units, could become the primary commercial target.
On the commercial front, OpenAI could adopt a model that integrates hardware and subscription services, creating an ecosystem dedicated to AI agents and developers.
A direct entry into the hardware market would mark a significant evolution for OpenAI, which in recent years has already shown interest in devices dedicated to artificial intelligence, including through strategic acquisitions in design, but which have yet to yield concrete results, opening the sector to new product categories.
