The 'True' Smart Returns: The New Two-Seater Compact Unveiled at the Beijing Auto Show
At the Beijing Auto Show, Smart presented the concept of the #2, its future heir to the two-seater model that distinguishes the brand. The car, a result of collaboration between Geely and Mercedes-Benz, reflects the design that has characterized the German manufacturer's offerings for decades, but is based on a concept of "city car" different from the essential one pursued until now.
From a technical perspective, the Smart #2 takes shape from the new Electric Compact Architecture (ECA) developed internally by Geely. This platform provides a claimed range of up to 400 km according to the CLTC cycle, a value significantly higher than the approximately 150 km of the previous ForTwo. Also on the performance front, Smart's CEO Xiangbei Tong has hinted at record numbers. In particular, he described the acceleration from 0 to 50 meters as "unbeatable."
The dimensions remain extremely compact, with a length of only 2.79 meters and a turning radius of less than 7 meters, features that enhance maneuverability in urban environments. Despite its reduced size, the cabin focuses on high-quality materials and finishes, with a configuration reminiscent of higher segment models like the Smart #1. The approach aims to position the vehicle as a premium object for urban mobility, not just a basic utility vehicle. In this regard, Tong stated: "I have driven nearly all the microcars currently on the market, and I can tell you: the Smart #2 is a real car, the others are not!".
On the charging front, the system supports DC fast charge technology, with a transition from 10% to 80% in less than 20 minutes. This facilitates daily use even in metropolitan contexts where parking times may be limited. An interesting technical aspect concerns the adaptation of the chassis to different markets. Suspension settings vary based on road conditions: softer configurations for Asian urban contexts and stiffer setups for European roads. This solution allows for a single global hardware base, with specific calibrations. The design also had to address stricter safety regulations, particularly for pedestrian protection. This required a complete review of the front geometry without compromising the "wheels-at-the-corners" layout, which maximizes the wheelbase relative to the overall length.
At the same time, Smart also presented the new #6 EHD, a 4.9-meter fastback with a wheelbase of 2,926 mm and a plug-in hybrid system based on a 1.5T engine. The model achieves a combined range of 1,810 km CLTC and declared consumption of 3.9 l/100 km. This offering targets a completely different segment, oriented towards high mileage and superior comfort. The debut of the production version of the Smart #2 is expected for October 2026 at the Paris Auto Show, with final interiors and complete specifications. The model represents a central piece in the brand's global expansion strategy, which aims to expand the range to five vehicles by the year end.
