Apple has found a way to reduce the production cost of the iPhone 18
The new iPhone 18 could feature several compromises. Apple, in fact, must contend with the memory crisis that is leading to an increase in production costs. For this reason, the company is reportedly looking to exploit all opportunities to minimize the costs of other components.
Unable to make changes to the chip, the new A20 which will be produced using TSMC's 2 nm manufacturing process, the Cupertino company may manage to contain costs with a curious choice related to the display.
Apple could, in fact, adopt an old-generation OLED panel for its upcoming iPhone 18, drastically reducing the costs of this component.
An unexpected choice
The new iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max will use M16 OLED panels supplied by Samsung Display. These are the latest generation panels from the Korean manufacturer, capable of renewing its displays year after year.
For the iPhone 18, however, the Cupertino company is expected to fall back on the M12+, an evolution of the panel previously used by the Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra and the iPhone 14 Pro. Thus, this is not exactly a recent technology.
This choice could have a negative impact on consumption and image quality, but it should ensure that Apple drastically reduces the cost of its new smartphone, set to launch in early 2027.
Further details regarding the features of the Cupertino company's smartphone should emerge over the next few weeks. Meanwhile, the launch of the Pro and Pro Max models is scheduled for next September.
