Nutanix Government Cloud Clusters has landed on AWS European Sovereign Cloud, allowing companies operating in heavily regulated sectors to adopt the cloud services of an American hyperscaler.

The Complex Nexus of Cloud, Sovereignty, and Innovation

The cloud is a powerful accelerator for innovation and companies, especially larger ones, can hardly do without it. However, if these companies operate in regulated sectors like finance or healthcare, there are stringent European compliance requirements that limit the adoption of American infrastructures.

This limitation is necessary for several reasons. Due to the American Cloud Act, which allows the U.S. administration to request access to data stored on American servers, regardless of where the companies operate. There are also concerns about technological dependency: if for some reason the U.S. government decided to stop providing these services, it would obviously be a catastrophe for all entities reliant on them. Moreover, given the current geopolitical situation, such a scenario is not as remote as one might imagine.

Hence, there is a need for EU companies to rely on sovereign infrastructures. Hyperscalers have reacted by creating new parallel infrastructures, under European law, detached from potential U.S. interference, as in the case of AWS European Sovereign Cloud. Nutanix is leveraging this to support its Nutanix Government Cloud Clusters platform, thus enabling businesses and public entities to utilize the company's services for their public cloud workloads, in full compliance with European regulations regarding data sovereignty.

Nutanix Government Cloud Clusters: Simple Migrations Without Redesigning Infrastructure

With Nutanix's new solution, workloads operate within the client's AWS Virtual Private Cloud. This means that each client operates on their private tenant, not sharing any part of the infrastructure with others. Practically, this means that only the client has total control over their data and workloads.

Another important detail is that the Nutanix Cloud Platform extends to the AWS infrastructure rather than replacing it: clients will continue to use Prism as their control plane, also utilizing the same workflows for backups, recovery, security policy management, and governance controls. Practically, clients can rely on a Nutanix infrastructure identical to the one already in use, onto which they can quickly migrate their workloads.
