Hidden Features in ADLX Radeon Libraries: Is Multi Frame Generation Finally Coming?
AMD is reportedly ready to make a substantial update in advanced frame generation management, at least according to what has emerged from the updates to the ADLX 1.5 documentation published on April 17. Among the new features is a new interface called FidelityFX Frame Generation Upgrade, which is expected to introduce functions for checking support, activating the technology, and, above all, reading and setting a frame generation ratio.
This element represents a significant change compared to the current implementation, which is limited to a fixed performance increase, generally equal to 2x. The introduction of configurable ratios suggests the debut of Multi Frame Generation (MFG).
In fact, AMD does not explicitly use this terminology in the official documentation, but the presence of controls dedicated to ratios indicates the introduction of a multiplier that allows the user to choose the number of frames generated for each rendered frame, essentially MFG as seen on NVIDIA and Intel GPUs. The new option, identified as IADLX3DFidelityDXFrameGenUpgradeRatioOption, indeed allows you to select the desired level based on the graphics load and GPU capabilities.
At the same time, AMD continues to develop the FSR Redstone ecosystem, exclusive to the latest Radeon RX 9000 series, which includes updates on upscaling, frame generation, and Ray Regeneration, with an increasing use of artificial intelligence and machine learning. In this context, FSR Frame Generation 4, an ML-based version designed for RDNA 4 architectures, is also being integrated, while an analytical fallback for previous architectures remains available.
However, an important question remains: which GPUs will support these new ratios? It is still unclear whether the functionality will be limited to the upcoming Radeon RX 9000—which seems the most likely scenario—or whether AMD will offer a compatible variant for older cards as well. Third-party solutions have already demonstrated feasibility on less recent Radeon hardware, but with variable results in terms of latency, image quality, and stability.
On the other hand, AMD is already behind in the MFG space: NVIDIA recently introduced support for up to 6x, although still limited to the GeForce RTX 5000 series, while Intel offers options up to 4x on a wide range of GPUs, including some integrated models. Moreover, just a few days ago, the developers of DLSS Enabler updated the tool which now offers 6x options also for GeForce RTX 4000 and Radeon RX 7000. In short, the company led by Lisa Su has clearly fallen behind its competitors.
It is reasonable to expect, therefore, that AMD's MFG will catch up with a more efficient pipeline and superior visual quality compared to the third-party alternatives seen so far. Regarding support for previous generations, AMD has already been clear about being focused on the Radeon RX 9000, but has not completely ruled out possible upgrades at least for the Radeon RX 7000. So, as they say, hope is the last to die.
