Tesla in the Desert Without Battery: The Extreme Journey of a YouTuber Saved by Emergency Solar Panels

An extraordinary journey through the Americas turned into an extreme technological survival test when a YouTuber was left without battery in the Atacama Desert, in Chile, one of the driest places on the planet. The protagonist of the adventure is Sandro van Kuijck, creator of the channel EverydaySandro, who has been on a solo journey for three years aboard his Tesla Model X, nicknamed "Beluga".

Starting from northern Canada with the goal of reaching Ushuaia, Argentina, van Kuijck had turned his vehicle into a true mobile home. The electric SUV was equipped with a kitchen, running water, refrigerator, and an independent energy system based on 287-watt solar panels connected to a 2 kWh EcoFlow auxiliary battery.

The problem arose in northern Chile, near Calama. After recharging to 95% at a Copec station, the traveler underestimated the energy consumption caused by the altitude (about 3,000 meters) and strong headwinds. When the remaining range dropped to 37 km, with the nearest station 42 km away, he was forced to stop along the Pan-American Highway.

The YouTuber's emergency plan when the Tesla ran out of battery in the middle of the desert At that point, he activated his emergency plan: to use the solar panels to slowly recharge the main battery. The energy produced, amounting to about 180-200 watts, allowed him to recover only 1-2 km of range per hour. A modest result, but enough to keep the vehicle "alive" and to avoid a complete system shutdown.

Despite his efforts, the auxiliary battery ran out, and no rescue company accepted to reach him. The situation was resolved thanks to a team of road workers, who allowed him to connect to an industrial generator, providing a minimal but vital charge. Subsequently, a tow truck organized by acquaintances transported him to a charging station, enabling him to resume his journey. This episode highlights the ongoing challenges for electric vehicles in remote areas of South America, where charging infrastructure is still limited.
