The robotic lawn mower sector has experienced exponential growth in recent months and has long been considered the "next big thing" in technology. There is one name in particular that we have often associated with other fields that has quickly become significant, and we are clearly talking about Segway. These are precisely the main features of the Navimow i206 AWD, a robotic lawn mower that accompanied us during a test to better understand what it truly means to own such a product, without limiting ourselves solely to the purely technical aspects. We show you everything in our video:

It Does It All by Itself, Including Mapping

The installation of Navimow i206 AWD resembles that of many other models: everything in the package is ready to use; you just need to connect the charging base to a power outlet and pair the robot via Bluetooth with the dedicated smartphone app. Done. Five minutes at most, which may take a little longer if there’s an update to download.

At this point, it is necessary to create a map of the lawn to manage, and here comes one of the strong points of our protagonist: automatic mapping. The Navimow i206 AWD recognizes its position on the lawn thanks to the satellite connection with RTK technology, which utilizes multiple satellites simultaneously, along with triangulating the position with an external antenna. The antenna in question is included in the package, but we can also choose not to use it, relying instead on the NRTK network. These signals are retrieved through a 4G connection from antennas spread across the territory, making the position equally precise, with a tolerance of just 2 cm.

And so far, we understand how the Navimow knows it is in a specific point on the lawn, but how does it determine where to cut and the shape of our garden? It does this through the front HD camera, powered by artificial intelligence, allowing it to scan the entire lawn, recognizing grass, obstacles, tiles, hedges; everything is faithfully reconstructed. In our case, a lawn of about 160 square meters was perfectly mapped in just over two minutes. An astonishing result, free from errors.

Single Cut or Weekly Program

In just a few minutes, the Navimow i206 AWD is ready to cut the lawn, and it can do so immediately, even without creating a weekly schedule. From the app, it’s possible to launch a whole immediate mowing, and the robot will start cutting the grass following a serpentine path, with parallel and organized cutting passes, thereby reducing work time. The cutting direction is one that best fits the shape of the lawn, but for the next operation, it will be altered, improving the quality of the cut, unless manual adjustments are made to the settings, choosing specific cutting directions, even just one.

Traction Control and Five Blades

In our test lawn, Navimow moved with agility and confidence, thanks to the All-Wheel-Drive system. Not only do the two large front wheels handle the traction, but so does the small rear wheel, which also helps with turns, by driving its electric motor that directs the robot better. Potholes are not a problem, nor are tight curves, and this system allows it to create true decorations on the lawn. Yes, because from the map management, we can also decide if we want the robot to create designs that include letters, numbers, or symbols. It will cut the grass all around, creating a relief effect. We experimented with a heart shape in the center of the lawn.

The cutting effectiveness turned out to be above average, thanks to the 18 cm blade disc equipped with five blades. Fewer passes and more effectiveness, for a less stressed lawn. Furthermore, there’s no need to worry about using the lawn while it’s being cut, as the same camera that allows the Navimow i206 to map the lawn also enables it to recognize up to 150 different obstacles, including pets and wildlife. If it detects anything, it simply turns around and retraces its steps, and it might cut the missing patch of grass later.

Remote Control and Rain Management

Grass can be cut at heights ranging from 20 mm to 60 mm, adjustable via a top manual knob. Besides the parallel passes, the robot also makes a tour of the whole boundary, cutting as close to the edge as possible, leaving only a few cm due to the fact that the cutting disc is located in the center of the machine. In case there are spots to finish better, we can rely on the manual control mode. Through this feature, we can drive the Navimow just like a remote-controlled vehicle, using a virtual joystick on the app, activating the cutting disc and thus having it cut some tufts of grass exactly where we want.

Weather management also relies on the network. We know that cutting the lawn when it’s wet isn’t ideal, even though the robot is protected with an IP66 rating, and we can avoid this thanks to weather info, which indicates to the Navimow when rain, snow, wind, or even extreme heat are forecasted. Thus, it can decide when to work and when not to, without risking getting into uncomfortable situations. In case it does happen, the traction control, with a car-like design, helps it navigate difficult terrains.

So how can we evaluate our user experience? To make a joke, it’s almost a non-experience, as the Navimow i206 AWD takes care of everything right from the installation process, saving us hours and hours of work while performing meticulous tasks with an appreciable aesthetic.
