PS6 Could Offer Performance Three Times Higher Than PS5 But Not Without Some Compromises

The first rumors about the upcoming PlayStation 6 outline an increasingly detailed picture of the next generation of Sony consoles. According to several leaks, including those shared by the YouTube channel Moore's Law Is Dead and insider KeplerL2, the PS6 could offer overall performance up to three times higher than the PlayStation 5, marking a significant leap, although less revolutionary compared to previous generations.

One of the most discussed aspects concerns the distinction between rasterization and ray tracing. Rasterization, which still forms the basis of most graphics in video games, could see an improvement of about 300%. This increase, while significant, would reflect a slowdown in the pace of innovation, suggesting the reaching of "physiological limits" regarding rasterization.

In contrast, ray tracing could register a much more marked leap. Estimates speak of performance six to twelve times higher compared to the PS5. However, this data wouldn’t automatically translate into an equivalent improvement in overall game performance, as many other graphical operations remain crucial in the final rendering.

PS6 Could Approach the Performance of an RTX 4080

According to available information, the PS6 could approximate the performance of an NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4080, although direct comparisons between consoles and PCs remain quite approximate. Games that make the most of ray tracing could benefit from more noticeable improvements, while other titles might show more modest increases.

Another central theme is the price. The current RAM memory crisis has already impacted the costs of existing consoles, bringing the PS5 up to $650 and the Pro version to about $900. This has fueled fears of a possible price exceeding $1000 for the PS6. However, some estimates suggest that Sony could maintain the price around $700, also thanks to sales strategies that would offset costs through games.

To contain the price, the company might reduce some features, such as storage space and even eliminate the disc drive. New technologies like neural texture compression could, however, offset these limitations by reducing the space needed for games. The release of the PlayStation 6 is currently expected between late 2027 and early 2028.
