Access to Internet via Mobile Network is a Fundamental Right for Users: Here is South Korea's Plan

Accessing the Internet via mobile networks can become a genuine right for people. In an increasingly connected society, it is no longer conceivable for most citizens to give up a device that is always connected and ready to access the Internet.

In South Korea, to ensure this right, the Ministry responsible for telecommunications has announced a significant agreement with the country's major telecom operators (SK Telecom, KT, and LG Uplus) to guarantee unlimited Internet access via mobile networks.

Here are all the details regarding the initiative aimed at providing citizens the ability to stay connected.

Is Staying Connected a Right?

The measure involves approximately 7 million people who, after exhausting the data of their tariff plan, will be able to continue browsing with unlimited traffic volume, but limited speed, with a cap set at 400 Kbps. This bandwidth is sufficient to send messages and make calls, as well as to perform very basic activities, such as sending an email. This is an interesting measure aimed at eliminating the risk of being without Internet.

In addition to this initiative, the operators have committed to introducing a series of benefits for older users and offering cheaper 5G plans. The three operators involved in the initiative had previously been at the center of various cybersecurity incidents that required government intervention to protect consumers.
