Data Sovereignty: The First European Disaster Recovery Solution Arrives

During the European Data Summit in Berlin, an important development related to data sovereignty was presented: Cubbit, SUSE, Elemento Cloud, and StorPool Storage have made available the first fully European and sovereign disaster recovery solution. This is a step forward towards the independence of EU companies from services offered by US hyperscalers.

The First European Disaster Recovery Suite

Backups are not enough, especially when operating in mission-critical areas. In such situations, even a service interruption of hours or minutes can cause significant economic damage or worse; therefore, it is essential to equip oneself with disaster recovery solutions capable of immediately restoring operations in the event of severe damage.

In practice, a disaster recovery system consists of a clone of the entire infrastructure, hosted in a data center a few kilometers away, which intervenes if the primary site is no longer available, for example, due to cyberattacks or natural disasters.

The problem is that today most of these solutions are hosted on systems of American multinationals, creating a dangerous dependence on the USA. Cubbit, SUSE, Elemento Cloud, and StorPool Storage aim to solve this problem with a Sovereign Disaster Recovery Suite.

This suite allows companies to secure their most critical services, create a sovereign recovery environment, and verify its effectiveness, gradually extending this model to other workloads through synchronization and migration activities. The value does not stop at operational continuity; this approach also helps meet the requirements imposed by frameworks such as NIS2, DORA, GDPR, and regional regulations, maintaining European control over the entire technological stack.

Why Is It Important?

Depending on solutions provided by foreign companies for sensitive and delicate tasks such as disaster recovery is a risk that companies and public entities cannot afford. Now more than ever, given the complex geopolitical situation where even a historically allied country like the USA can represent a potential threat to data sovereignty. For this reason, having an entirely European solution is a real necessity to ensure autonomy, independence, and the proper functioning of critical infrastructures for EU countries.

"European digital sovereignty will only scale when it becomes a practice to adopt. The Sovereign Disaster Recovery Suite stems from a concrete operational need already raised by some of the largest European companies — disaster recovery, indeed — and transforms it into a single solution to implement. It offers organizations a realistic way to strengthen resilience and maintain control over critical data and services, starting to build a sovereign alternative over time," says Alessandro Cillario, Co-CEO and Co-founder of Cubbit.

"True digital sovereignty is not built in isolation: it originates from a collaborative ecosystem of open and interoperable technologies. By integrating the enterprise-level open-source foundations of SUSE with the specialized expertise of our partners, we are demonstrating that Europe not only has the components — it has a complete and mission-critical stack," declares Andreas Prins, Global Head of Sovereign Solutions at SUSE.

"Digital sovereignty in Europe has not been hindered by a lack of technology, but by a lack of integration. Without orchestration, even the best technologies remain fragmented. Organizations do not need more components — they need control at the moment that matters most. This initiative transforms sovereignty into an operational reality, enabling a concrete exit from dependence on non-European infrastructures. Elemento makes all of this possible through the first vendor-neutral control plane, Electros, and our hypervisor, AtomOS, which unify fragmented environments into a single, resilient system," explains Gabriele Fronzé, CEO and Co-founder of Elemento Cloud.

"European organizations need robust, integrated, and reliable sovereign IT solutions developed by European companies, capable of ensuring security, operational continuity, and independence. Existing alternatives are few and fragmented, and with the Sovereign Disaster Recovery Suite, we are contributing to changing the situation," says Boyan Ivanov, CEO of StorPool Storage.
