Google Launches Native App for Windows: Search Comes Out of the Browser
The Mountain View giant has officially announced the global release of the Google app for desktop dedicated to Windows users. After the testing phase, the application is now downloadable in English, bringing the entire search ecosystem directly into the operating system interface. The software is designed to integrate into daily workflows, reducing friction between web browsing and local file management.
The core of the experience is the AI Mode, a mode that allows users to interact with a generative artificial intelligence to obtain contextual responses. Unlike traditional chatbots, the system provides direct links to web sources, allowing users to delve deeper into information without losing the thread of their search. The goal is to maintain operational continuity, avoiding constant switching between different windows or Chrome tabs.
Google App for Windows Available Globally
The app can be invoked particularly quickly: through the key combination Alt + Space, users can instantly call up a search bar that overlays any ongoing activity. This bar does not just query Google on the web; it performs a complete scan that includes the applications installed on the computer, saved local documents, and files stored on Google Drive.
This deep integration transforms the tool into a true document management hub. The ability to search for a file on Drive or a specific software directly from the Google search bar eliminates several intermediate steps, making the Windows desktop more cohesive with the company's cloud services.
The application also brings to desktop one of the most appreciated functions in the mobile realm: Google Lens. Users can now select any portion of the screen to initiate a visual search, a function that is particularly useful for instant translation of texts found in images or videos, as well as for study support, such as resolving complex problems displayed on screen.
At the same time, the integrated screen sharing feature allows users to query the artificial intelligence while keeping their work visible (a text document or a specific web page). The app is able to "read" the context of a single window or the entire desktop to provide targeted assistance, acting as a virtual assistant that does not interrupt the productive flow.
The download is available through the official Google portal for English-speaking users.
