Fastweb Joins Starlink Mobile Partners: A Major Innovation in Satellite Connectivity Is Coming to Italy

In recent months, the telecommunications sector has shown strong signs of innovation, especially due to the development of satellite technologies. In this context, Starlink Mobile, the connectivity service developed by SpaceX, aims to revolutionize traditional mobile networks. One of the most relevant developments concerns Italy, where Fastweb has recently appeared among the partner operators of the service.

Starlink Mobile is designed to be used exclusively by mobile network operators who make agreements with Starlink. Thanks to this collaboration, operators can leverage a constellation of over 650 satellites in low Earth orbit to extend mobile network coverage. The service, known as Direct To Cell, allows satellites to connect directly to smartphones without the need for hardware modifications or dedicated antennas.

One of the most innovative features of the system is its compatibility with current LTE phones. With a clear view of the sky, users can connect directly to the satellites, which act as true repeaters in space. This is made possible by advanced technologies such as phased array antennas and laser links, which ensure a stable and global connection.

Fastweb and Starlink Mobile: Further Details on the Service

In practice, when a user is in an area not covered by the terrestrial network, the device can automatically latch onto the satellite signal. The data is then routed through a Starlink Gateway on Earth, integrating it into the partner operator's network. This process allows for service continuity, avoiding interruptions during the transition between terrestrial and satellite networks.

The introduction of the new generation of satellites, named Starlink Mobile V2, promises further improvements, including full 5G support. This could significantly enhance the performance and usability of the service.

As for Italy, Fastweb's presence among the partners suggests that the operator, part of the Swisscom group, has initiated a collaboration with Starlink. Following the acquisition of Vodafone Italy, the company also operates under the Fastweb + Vodafone brand, expanding its customer base. However, at this time, the service is not yet available in the country, and it has not been officially announced. Therefore, the details of the agreement and the launch timeline are not known.
