Roblox: Mandatory Age-Limited Accounts to Separate Content and Increase Minors' Safety

Roblox is preparing to introduce one of the most significant changes in its recent history by implementing a mandatory age-divided account system. After launching age verification in 2025, initially focused on chat access, the platform is now taking a further step in separating game content.

Starting from mid-May, users will be automatically placed into one of three levels: Roblox Kids, Roblox Select, and Roblox Standard. In the United States, these categories correspond to the age groups of 5-8 years, 9-15 years, and 16 years and up, although the thresholds may vary by country. Each level is linked to the existing content maturity labels on the platform: Minimal, Mild, Moderate, and Restricted.

Kids accounts will be the most limited: chat will be disabled by default, and access will only be granted to experiences classified as Minimal or Mild. Users aged 9 to 15, categorized as Select, will be able to communicate with peers and with "trusted friends" approved by parents, as well as access Moderate level content. From the age of 16, users will automatically transition to a full account, while still maintaining some restrictions: content rated as Restricted will remain blocked until they turn 18.

Users' Reception of Roblox Age Verification

Roblox has stated that over half of its users have already completed age verification through documents or facial scans. With the global rollout of the new system expected by June, unverified users will be automatically limited to an experience similar to that of Kids, with no chat and reduced content access.

The platform also aims to improve control over user-generated content. Developers will be required to verify their identity and subscribe to a $5 monthly plan to demonstrate their commitment. Additionally, AI systems will monitor games to ensure they are correctly classified.

New parental control features are also on the way. Parents will be able to block specific games, manage direct chats, and manually approve content outside of their children's age group. Despite these efforts, there are still doubts about the effectiveness of automatic age verification systems. Some reports have highlighted how even very young users can bypass controls, questioning the integrity of the entire system.
