OpenAI Launches ChatGPT Pro at $100 per Month to Compete with Anthropic in AI Coding

OpenAI has announced the launch of a new subscription plan called ChatGPT Pro at $100 per month, aiming to strengthen its position in the competitive market of artificial intelligence tools, particularly in the field of assisted programming.

The new Pro level is designed for advanced users and professionals who heavily utilize Codex, the AI assistant for code writing developed by OpenAI. Compared to the Plus plan at $20 per month, this new offering ensures up to five times more Codex usage, making it ideal for longer and more complex work sessions.

The introduction of this plan fits into a broader strategy to counter the growing popularity of Anthropic and its coding assistant, Claude Code. The latter has seen significant growth over the past year, becoming one of the leading competitors in the field. Anthropic currently offers four subscription levels, with the most expensive options providing higher usage limits.

OpenAI and ChatGPT Pro: The Company's New Strategy

With this innovation, OpenAI brings the total number of plans available for personal use to five: Free, Go, Plus, and two Pro levels, including the existing $200 plan. The goal is to offer a more flexible range of options that can cater to both casual users and those with more intensive needs.

Codex, initially launched in April 2025 and made widely available in October of the same year, quickly became a fundamental tool for developers and companies. It is capable of automating complex tasks, fixing bugs, and generating code, significantly enhancing productivity. According to recent data, Codex has reached approximately three million weekly users, a number expected to grow further.

CEO Sam Altman stated that usage limits will progressively update as the platform approaches 10 million users. Economically, the sector is also expanding rapidly: AI-based coding tools surpassed a run-rate of $2.5 billion in February 2026, with growth exceeding 100% since the beginning of the year. Finally, OpenAI has recently launched a standalone Codex app for Apple computers.
