Transforming the PC into an AI Workstation via USB-C: ASUS UGen300 Arrives
In the current technological landscape, dominated by cloud-based AI solutions, ASUS attempts to reverse the trend by introducing UGen300. This is the world's first USB device designed to interface an external NPU directly to the user's hardware, eliminating the need for internet connectivity and the payment of monthly fees for generative artificial intelligence services.
The beating heart of this accelerator is the Hailo-10H processor, a unit capable of delivering computing power of 40 TOPS (Trillion Operations Per Second). This value allows the device to handle complex workloads typically reserved for next-generation integrated NPUs or discrete GPUs. Specifically, UGen300 is optimized for generative AI, supporting both large language models (LLM) and visual analysis through Vision Language Models (VLM) for object recognition and automatic descriptions.
To prevent bottlenecks and not burden the host system's resources, ASUS has integrated 8 GB of dedicated LPDDR4 memory into the module. Despite the claimed power, energy efficiency remains a strong point: power consumption is around 2.5 Watts during standard operations.
The UGen300 features a compact size and a USB 3.1 Gen 2 Type-C interface. Compatibility extends to Windows, Linux, and Android operating systems, making it a cross-functional tool for various user categories. According to the Taiwanese company, it is ideal for those seeking absolute privacy in text processing, speech synthesis, and local video summarization. Moreover, support for TensorFlow, PyTorch, and ONNX standards ensures immediate operational flexibility. ASUS has also confirmed the upcoming arrival of a variant in M.2 format.
The market debut is expected in summer 2026. As for the software side, ASUS will release the UGen utility to facilitate project validation through over 100 pre-trained models. The driver roadmap anticipates Windows support to be released in May 2026, while Android compatibility, initially reserved for the B2B market, will be extended later. Currently, ASUS has not yet officially announced the retail price for the Italian market.
