Will the Switch 2 Also Increase in Price? A Price Hike May Be Inevitable
Following Sony's decision to increase the price of the PS5 starting in April, a price hike for the Nintendo Switch 2 may also be on the horizon. This is not a completely new topic; the issue of the Switch 2's price has long been at the center of rumors and speculation hinting at a possible increase by Nintendo due to the memory crisis and, consequently, higher production costs compared to the launch. Further confirmation regarding the upcoming price hikes has surfaced in recent hours.
Is a price increase inevitable?
In an interview released on the Kit & Krysta podcast, a former Nintendo employee, who used the pseudonym Sean and worked for the company as a sales manager, defined the price increase of the Switch 2 in the near future as "inevitable."
The company is reportedly trying to compensate for the decline in profit margins related to hardware sales by focusing on other forms of revenue, but the possibility of a price hike is becoming more concrete, especially considering the potential cut in production after a lower-than-expected final part of 2025.
The motivations behind the possible price increase are varied. Inflation, tariffs, and the industry crisis related to the high demand for AI chips are factors that cannot be ignored. In addition, there is the issue of oil, which impacts chip costs not only from an energy standpoint: According to the former Nintendo employee, "Helium is a byproduct of oil production. Helium is a key and irreplaceable ingredient in semiconductor manufacturing, which means hardware prices are increasing. It is an irreplaceable byproduct of silicon wafer production, which means that if you are Nintendo and producing cartridges, prices will also increase."
In any case, it's important to note that Nintendo has never confirmed (nor excluded) a potential price increase for its console. This issue will need to be monitored in the near future, and updates in this regard may come during the presentation of the financial data for the recently concluded quarter, scheduled for May 12.
