More and More Steam Users Choose Linux for Gaming
The March 2026 edition of the Steam Hardware and Software Survey has been published, highlighting some clear trends among users of the platform, a true benchmark for gamers. Over the last month, there has been a decline in Windows users, with a drop of -14.89% for Windows 10.
Significant Growth for Linux
The data from the survey shows a strong growth for Linux, reaching a market share of 5.33% with an increase of +3.1% compared to previous measurements, confirming the growing interest in the operating system on the platform. Gaming on Linux, especially thanks to SteamOS, is increasingly on the rise, and the results are evident when analyzing the distribution of various distributions among Steam users, a platform that has recently recorded a new peak of concurrent active users.
It's also worth noting growth for macOS, which reaches 2.35% of the total, with an increase of +1.19% in users.
In this context, Windows is down (-4.28% with an overall share of 92.33%), but the biggest growth is seen in Windows 11, which records an increase of +10.57% in users, reaching an overall share of 66.85%. Essentially, 2 out of 3 users choose the latest version of Windows to use Steam.
Please note that the survey conducted by Steam is optional and should not be considered a statistical analysis. It is, however, a survey that highlights a trend to monitor. Gaming on Linux is growing and may continue to do so in the future.
