Stellantis Recalls 700,000 Hybrid Cars Due to Fire Risk: Here Are All the Affected Models

Stellantis has initiated a voluntary precautionary recall affecting approximately 700,000 vehicles equipped with the 3rd generation 1.2 PureTech gasoline engine in 48V mild hybrid configuration, produced between mid-2023 and early 2026. The issue concerns an assembly defect that can lead to a thermal event in the engine compartment: this is not a coercive measure issued by the German automotive authority KBA, but rather a step taken spontaneously by the manufacturer, with the KBA communicating the overall figures.

The technical cause is specific: the space between the gasoline particulate filter (GPF) pipe and the integrated starter-generator in the 48V belt (BSG) is in some cases lower than the minimum required. In the presence of humidity, contact between the two components can lead to overheating and, in the worst cases, a fire in the engine compartment. Stellantis has confirmed that it has recorded 36 related incidents worldwide, including 12 cases of fire onset.

The brands involved are Peugeot, Citroën, DS Automobiles, Fiat, Alfa Romeo, Jeep, Lancia, and Opel/Vauxhall. By model, the scope is as follows:

  • 295,000 Peugeot 208 and 2008
  • 126,000 Citroën C3, C4, and C3 Aircross
  • 124,000 Fiat Grande Panda
  • 88,000 Jeep Avenger
  • 44,000 Alfa Romeo Junior

It is no coincidence that these models share the same powertrain architecture, with the 1.2 turbo 3-cylinder engine paired with the 48V mild hybrid system.

The highest concentration of vehicles to be recalled is found in France, with 212,000 units (more than half under the Peugeot brand) followed by Germany with around 80,000 units, a figure communicated directly by a Stellantis Deutschland spokesperson to Handelsblatt and confirmed by ADAC. In the United Kingdom, the recall affects approximately 44,000 cars, while in other European and international markets, the figures remain partially undefined officially. For those wishing to check if their vehicle is included in the campaign, it is possible to verify the vehicle identification number (VIN) on the manufacturer’s website, at any Stellantis service center, or through the KBA’s public recall database.

The Intervention: 30 Minutes, Free

Stellantis has already informed customers that the corrective intervention is free and takes about 30 minutes at authorized centers. Mechanics will replace the protective cap of the BSG with a version with better thermal insulation and check the clearance between components, correcting it if necessary. The group is directly contacting owners of affected vehicles to schedule the service appointment.

This is not the first incident of this kind for the group: at the end of 2025, Stellantis had already managed the recall of over 370,000 Jeep Wrangler 4xe and Grand Cherokee 4xe for a fire risk related to the high-voltage battery pack during charging. This is a very different issue in terms of technology but has contributed to making the safety of electrification a sensitive topic for the manufacturer.
