Amazon Leo Will Provide Internet Access Up to 1 Gbps During Flights

Amazon aims to become a reference point in the satellite connection industry by leveraging the Amazon Leo system. To achieve this goal, challenging the current dominance of Starlink, it is necessary to demonstrate the network's capabilities.

To do this, Amazon has struck a deal with Delta Air Lines to implement Amazon Leo on hundreds of Delta's aircraft starting in 2028. This will enable high-speed and low-latency connectivity during flights.

According to Amazon, the project has very ambitious goals. Each Delta aircraft will be equipped with a unique phased array antenna (based on Leo Ultra technology) designed to support download speeds of up to 1 Gbps and upload speeds of up to 400 Mbps.

Currently, Amazon Leo relies on a constellation of thousands of satellites in low Earth orbit, about 600 kilometers from the planet's surface.

Free Connection

The partnership with Delta Air will provide significant benefits for travelers: Delta SkyMiles members will have free access to the Wi-Fi network (likely with limitations related to available data traffic).

The interesting aspect of this initiative is the absence of exclusivity for Delta Air (there are no references regarding this in the official statement). Essentially, Amazon could replicate the service with other airlines, offering fast connectivity to a larger number of aircraft.

Andy Jassy, President and CEO of Amazon, clearly stated the objectives: "People increasingly want to stay connected wherever they are in the world, and the speed and reliability of Leo will have a significant impact on businesses, governments, and consumers. It will greatly improve the flying experience and change what is possible to do during trips."
