Emergency Update for Windows 11: Fix Released for Error 0x80073712
Microsoft has released an out-of-band (OOB) update identified as KB5086672 for Windows 11, specifically aimed at resolving a bug that prevented the installation of previous preview versions. The emergency release became necessary after numerous users reported the inability to complete the update KB5079391, which was initially distributed the previous Thursday for Windows 11 24H2 and 25H2 systems.
The issue manifested with the error code 0x80073712, accompanied by a system message indicating missing or corrupt update files. This situation prompted Redmond to halt the distribution of the problematic patch over the weekend, and then work on a corrective build that included both the originally intended improvements and the fix for the failed installation process.
New Emergency Update for Windows 11
The update KB5086672 inherits the entire package of 29 changes planned for the March 2026 preview version. Among the most relevant new features are optimizations for Smart App Control and several improvements related to display management. As a cumulative OOB update, this package fully replaces all previous versions, ensuring that updated machines receive both security protections and new non-security-related features simultaneously.
Regarding distribution, Microsoft has confirmed that devices that have enabled the “Get the latest updates as soon as they are available” option in settings will automatically see KB5086672 appear via Windows Update. System administrators and advanced users can still proceed with the manual installation by searching for the patch in the control panel or downloading it directly from the Microsoft Update Catalog.
The release of KB5086672 is just the latest piece in a series of quick interventions that Microsoft has implemented in recent months aimed at stabilizing the Windows 11 platform. The company has promised a change of course in the near future, which will improve the quality perception around the operating system and the ecosystem of available applications.
